Lot 621: Lagonda 16/80 Tourer
Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams (24th April 2006)
Based on the chassis of the preceding 2-Litre Continental four-cylinder model, whose overall style and good looks it retained, the six-cylinder 16/80 was new for the 1933 season. The 16/80 employed a 1,991cc overhead-valve Crossley engine, reworked by Lagonda to its own specification, and could be ordered with conventional four-speed manual or pre-selector transmission enabling swift and easy changes. Autocar liked Lagonda’s new medium-size model (which took its name from its 16hp RAC rating and 80mph top speed) remarking on its silence, smoothness, brisk acceleration and effortless high-speed cruising. Approximately 260 were made, around half of which are believed to survive.
This example was purchased by the vendor in October 2003, having been in the immediately preceding owner’s possession since 1971 and in storage since 1996. ‘KY 4700’ retains its original T6 tourer body, which is distinguished from other body types by its sloping tail and boot-mounted spare wheel, and has the desirable ENV pre-selector gearbox. The car had never had a full ‘last-nut-and-bolt’ restoration, and was returned to the road by the vendor with sympathetic regard to its highly original state while making the car presentable and reliable. Recent work carried out includes fitting a new mohair hood, frame and stowage bag; new carpets; new battery box and rear foot-well box; and fresh wiring as required. In addition, the original ‘helmet’-style cycle wings have been refitted, and the engine, gearbox, brakes and back axle thoroughly checked, with all necessary work carried out where required. All are reported in good working order. Used regularly and reliably by its present owner, ‘KY 4700’ is offered with recent invoices (totalling £2,740), old-style logbook, current road fund licence, Swansea V5 registration document and fresh MoT.
