Lot 031: 1987 CHEVROLET CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE

An Auction Of Fine Collectors' Motor Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (16th April 2008)

1987 CHEVROLET CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE
Arguably the most radical 'Vette in two decades, the fourth generation or C4 model was introduced in March 1983. Built around a C-section beam reinforced monocoque, it was equipped with composite transverse-leaf independent suspension and rack and pinion steering. Fitted with 16 x 8.5 alloy wheels shod with P255/50VR-16 tyres as standard, the C4's handling drew considerable praise from the contemporary press. Powered by a 350ci / 5.7litre V8 engine mated to either four-speed automatic or manual gearboxes, it was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in under seven seconds and over 140mph. Boasting new aluminium callipers, its four-wheel disc braking system proved more efficient than ever. Noticeably lower-slung than its predecessor, the new car actually possessed greater ground clearance (thanks to a cunningly routed exhaust) and more spacious interior. A definite hit with buyers in period, the latter's digital instrumentation now looks fashionably retro. Finished in red with red leather upholstery and a white hood, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition with regard to its 'Tuned-Port Injection' engine (230bhp, 330lbft), automatic gearbox, electrical equipment (including the digitized dashboard), interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Said to be "fully loaded with a factory alarm, immobilizer, Sony CD stereo, PAS, ABS, alloy wheels, electric windows / seats / mirrors, cruise control, air conditioning and factory over carpets", the 'Vette also benefits from an 'overdrive' facility which translates "1,700rpm into 70mph". Stated to have covered just 70,000 miles from new, it is offered for sale with a "wonderful history", original handbook and current MOT certificate. PLEASE NOTE: This lot is accompanied by a 1989 handbook (rather than a 1987 one). Also, its MOT certificate expires in September 2008 and not April 2009 as stated in the catalogue.
