Lot 321: Jaguar XKE Series II Coupe
Motorcycle and Motorcars, Bonhams & Butterfields (14th November 2009)
Continuing on the legend created by the XK120, and subsequent 140 and 150, the XKE was received by the press and public to the very highest acclaim. With 150mph performance, superb handling, the car delivered on all the promises of its stunning looks. Mechanical developments in the first few years included enlarged engine capacity to 4.2 liters, uprated cooling system, fully synchronized transmissions, and interior design and appointments to turn the car in to the ultimate grand tourer of the day.
This fabulous numbers-matching example of the Series II coupe, born in California, has been the beneficiary of a frame-up restoration using all original sheet metal. The entire car's mechanicals have been rebuilt and refurbished to exacting standards. In silver with red interior, and featuring correct chrome wire wheels, the car has been "modernized" with a 5-speed transmission. With an original 98,000 miles, confirmed by the two previous owners, the car has covered only 250 miles since restoration, and is ready to tour or show.
