Lot 364: 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series III Roadster

Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams (22nd June 2007)

1973 Jaguar E-Type Series III Roadster
One consequence of the E-Type’s long process of development had been a gradual increase in weight, but a good measure of the concomitant loss of performance was restored in 1971 with the arrival of the Series III V12. Weighing only 80lb more than the cast-iron-block 4.2-litre XK six, the new all-alloy, 5.3-litre, overhead-camshaft V12 produced 272bhp, an output good enough for a top speed in excess of 140mph. Exceptionally refined and flexible, it is still regarded as one of the finest production engines ever. Further good news was that the 0-100mph time of around 16 seconds made the V12 the fastest accelerating of all E-Types. Built in two-seat roadster and ‘2+2’ coupé versions, the Series III E-Type continued the Jaguar tradition of offering a level of performance and luxury unrivalled at the price.
This right-hand drive, manual-transmission example benefits from a recent bare-metal repaint in Azure Blue, and features a black leather interior and optional factory hardtop. It is fitted with new chromed wire wheels, while the original steel wheels and hubs are included. Purchased new by a Mr Brown on 1st November 1973, the car remained in his possession for over 30 years before he decided to sell it in June 2006. It is, therefore, a genuine two-owner car and the mileage, which currently stands at circa 43,000, is verified by numerous MoT certificates dating back to 1982.
The extensive history file contains assorted correspondence, previous and current registration documents, and sundry service invoices dating from the early 1980s to the present day. In recent years the car has been regularly serviced and maintained by Kent High Performance Cars; many parts have been reconditioned and a stainless-steel exhaust system and Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser installed, while the recent full service included fitting new rear suspension. Offered with fresh MoT, current road fund licence, Swansea V5 and the original service pack including handbooks and manuals, this delightful Series III roadster represents an opportunity to acquire a genuine low mileage, two-owner example that has been well cared for from new.
