Lot 227: Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7
Legende et Passion, Coys (18th May 2009)
One of the most famous Porsches ever built, the 911 Carrera RS has come to be regarded as one of the top sports cars to emerge from the 1970's. It was designed with motor sport very much in mind: Porsche's engineers wanted a car that could be successfully used on the race track and the road. Few people could ever argue that they did not succeed in their aim, for the RS is an eminently useable car just as at home trickling through traffic as it is ploughing down the overtaking lane of the autobahn; yet when competing at Le Mans, Daytona and in the Targa Florio it was almost invincible, often winning outright against pure racing prototypes.
The RS (for Rennsport) was based on the 911 model but used lightened bodywork and a revised 2.7 litre, fuel-injected version of the ubiquitous flat-six cylinder engine, the largest then used in a road-going Porsche. With a weight of around 950kg and an honest 210bhp on tap, the RS could sprint from standstill to 60mph in just over five seconds and achieve a genuine 158mph; it was one of the fastest production cars in the world.
We are proud to present a particularly good and original example of one of these much sought after Porsches. The car on offer here is an RS in nearly perfect and unmolested condition, with a mileage of under 50,000 km from new. Engine and gearbox are matching and correspond to the original Porsche order number. Delivered directly from Porsche Zuffenhausen and exported to Japan as early as in 1977, the car is - according to its current owner, a Porsche expert himself accident-free and has only been repainted once in 1982.
The only later additions are an exterior mirror to the right side (mounted in Japan) and a roll cage. An expert statement from 2009 states that the car was originally delivered by Porsche with the following equipment, all of which it retains to this day: Sport gearbox, alloy wheels, Recaro sport seats in partial leather in black, additional lights over front bumper, touring package MO 472, 3-point seatbelts, antenna, rear spoiler, sports exhaust and sport steering wheel. The car is further described in the aforementioned expert evidence as being one of only a handful of RS cars in such original condition. This rare collector's item is surely a cornerstone in every Porsche collection and not to be missed.
