Lot 016: 1959 MG A LE MANS SPECIAL
Motor Car Sale, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (24th May 2006)
Introduced in Autumn 1955, the MGA Roadster married a proven chassis design derived from its TD/TF predecessors (independent coil and wishbone front suspension and a 'live' rear axle) to the new B-series four-cylinder, pushrod-ohv engine first seen in the Magnette saloon. Borrowing cues from the Abingdon factory's successful EX182 prototype racers (fifth and sixth in class at that year's Le Mans) its wonderfully elegant styling ensured strong sales on both sides of the Atlantic. Continually updated, the MGA range was joined by Coupe and 'Twin Cam' variants in 1956 and 1958 respectively. Prompted by the latter's performance advantage, the standard pushrod model received a capacity increase to 1588cc and front disc brakes in May 1959. Equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox and rack and pinion steering as standard, the resultant '1600' MKI was reputedly capable of 100mph plus.
Finished in British Racing Green with green leather seats, this particular example has reportedly been rebuilt by Barrie Carter to what the vendor terms "Le Mans Special specification". Benefiting from an uprated chassis, steering and brakes, it is powered by a "reconditioned MGB 1840cc engine" mated to a "five-speed synchromesh gearbox". Resprayed, re-trimmed and rewired as part of the transformation process, it was also treated to "new batteries, starter and cooling fan". Shod with fresh tyres, it apparently "took part in the MGCC 50th Anniversary visit to Le Mans in June 2005" before being "invited to run at the MAC Shelsey Walsh Hillclimb" two months later. Wonderfully evocative, this much enhanced MGA is offered for sale with rebuild photos, sundry paperwork and a "new PRG Mini Super Sport Trailer" (which alone cost ú1,700 in July 2005).
PLEASE NOTE: This car was fully restored by Barrie Carter for the present owner and is being sold with the trailor.
