Lot 252: 1956 Alfa Romeo 1900 SS
Légende et Passion, Coys (20th May 2006)
Mille Miglia eligibleIn 1910, a group of Milanese businessmen took over a factory in Portello, an industrial suburb of Milan, to produce Darracq 4-cylinder taxicabs. This group was called Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or A.L.F.A. The company entered production at a time whenthe sporting world was re-focusing its attention on regular production vehicles; it means sporting passenger cars with small, high-efficiency engines. In 1916 the mining industrialist Nicola Romeo joined ALFA and the Alfa Romeo marque was born. Alfa Romeo won almost every major motor competition in Europe. From hill climbs to Grand Prix, Le Mans and Mille Miglia, Alfas cars set standards by which others were judged. The early Alfa's were considered to be among the world's ultimate road cars, even surpassing Mercedes, Maserati and Bugatti. Alfa worked frequently together with the major coachbuilders like Zagato, Touring, Pinin Farina to produce luxury vehicles for wealthy people. The new 1900 was Alfa's first entirely new post war design, it was advanced in chassis concept and its 1900cc, 4 cylinder twin cam engine remains largely unchanged to this day. Chassis 10129 according to the 1900 register is one of the first of 349 examples of this model produced by Alfa Romeo. The car has been subject to an exacting restoration. A photographic record which accompanies the car details the extent of this work. The bodywork which is entirely in aluminium was taken back to bare metal and where necessary renewed. The chassis itself was restored and repainted. This car has a floor mounted Nardi gear change and Nardi steering wheel as well as correct Borrani wire wheels. The car now presents itself in beautiful restored condition and a testament to the years of restoration work that went into the car. Being an early example it is eligible for a number of important events including the Mille Miglia where a number of the pretty coupes are always present.
