Lot 1052: 1962 Jaguar Mk II

Quail Lodge Motor Cars, Bonhams & Butterfields (19th August 2005)

1962 Jaguar Mk II
There was a time when the Jaguar Mk II 3.8 was the fastest four-door sedan in the world. Like all Jaguars it was stunning to look at, gratifying to drive and capable of a very good turn of speed.

The 3.8 version of the Mk II used a twin-carburetor variant of the engine used in the E-Type sports car. Rated at 220 bhp, it was capable of hauling the 3,100 pound car to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, which was very quick for the day. Top speed was a genuine 126 mph.

Independent front suspension used coil springs, wishbones and an anti-roll bar, while the live rear axle was located by radius arms and a Panhard rod, with telescopic shock absorbers and longitudinal leaf springs controlled the ride. Brakes were Dunlop discs all around, while steering was Burman recirculating ball. Transmission choices included a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic.

Fully-restored, this dark metallic green Mk II looks almost black in certain light. Inside, the cockpit has been retrimmed in black leather.

Tastefully updated so that it is suitable for modern traffic conditions, although this Mk II began as a 3.8, it now benefits from a big-valve, high-compression 4.2 mated to a General Motors 700R4 automatic overdrive transmission. A stainless steel exhaust system was fitted as part of the restoration in 2000.

Daily driving is made much easier by the addition of power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, big brakes and Koni shock absorbers. A heavy duty cross-flow radiator will keep this big cat cool, even with the Vintage Air blowing cold. The Vintage Air installation also includes a heater as well as an air conditioning unit. Driver and passenger alike will also enjoy the electric sunroof.

Externally, this particular green Jaguar sedan is distinguished by chrome wire wheels with Avon tires, and Coomb-style rear wheel arch spats and louvered bonnet. With the same owner for a decade, the Mk II is titled in California and comes with a current registration.
