The word Carrera has a special place amongst Porsche road cars, named after the gruelling pan American road race. All Porsche cars with this title have had a lot to live up to. So when so many motoring journalists have hailed the new Carrera GT as the finest road car in Porsche's history, one should sit up and pay attention. Unveiled in 2003 at the Geneva International Motor Show and introduced in 2004, the new Carrera is bursting with race car technology. Porsche claims the Carrera GT will yield a full-blown racetrack experience on the road and ultra lightweight construction is paramount. The monocoque structure and sub frame of the Carrera GT are made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic. The car has a flat bottom and a rear diffuser.Not only will the Carrera GT accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in less than 4 seconds, but it can also reach 125 mph in 9.9 seconds due to a specially developed six-speed-manual gearbox. The roadsters roof consists of two individual carbon-fibre shells that can be stowed in the front compartment. Each weighs 5.3 pounds. Porsche builds the Carrera GT in Leipzig, Germany.Looking how a real supercar should look, the Carrera GT is easy to spot with its deeply scalloped body sides that run from the trailing edge of each front fender, through the doors and just into the rear quarter panels. Projector-style headlights and a roll bar complete the look along side a gaping air intake sitting low on the front end with long nacelles positioned to the rear of each seat.Measuring 181 inches long overall and riding on a 106.8-inch wheelbase, the Carrera GT is 75.6 inches wide and 45.9 inches tall. The underbody is fully encased in carbon fibre providing an additional suction effect thanks to the rear diffuser and flow channels. Such is the road holding of the Carrera GT that one journalist said that the first impression one gets when behind the wheel is one of off-the-scale, black-hole density, a gravitas that feels rooted in the Earth's core. With such vast power, vast stopping power is also needed. This comes from Porsches Ceramic Composite Brakes; ceramic is also used for the specially developed Ceramic Composite Clutch. The reactor core of this rocket is a 5.7-liter V-10 engine equipped with dry-sump lubrication producing 605 hp at 8,000 rpm and 435 pounds-feet of torque at 5,750 rpm. Based on the 5.5-liter V-10 that Porsche developed strictly for racing, the engine works with a six-speed-manual gearbox. Porsche claims the Carrera GT can reach a track speed of 205 mph. As one would expect, chassis number WPO2229824L000206 is presented in 'as-new' condition.
