Lot 609: Chevrolet Chevelle SS 327
Concours & Auction Weekend, Coys (18th July 2009)
In August 1963 the Chevelle legend started at a press conference in Chicago when Chevrolet revealed that it needed to fill the gap between its full size Impala and its compact Nova models. Making its debut in 1964, the new Chevelle was produced right up until 1977 and was one of General Motors' most successful cars. The Chevelle SS, with its own line of engines and performance equipment, was the high performance version of the car and represented Chevrolet's entry into the hotly contested, midsize muscle car battle. Along with the Pontiac GTO, it remains one of the most popular cars from this era and with good reason; its strong performance at a reasonable price made it popular on the street and on the track. Early 1964 and 1965 Chevelles had a Malibu SS badge on the rear quarter panel but after 1965 the Malibu SS badge was deleted, the Chevelle SS then becoming a regular series of its own in 1966.
This early example, featuring the Malibu script on the rear quarter panel, is described by the vendor as being in good condition. Finished in red and riding on alloy wheels, the interior boasts power assisted steering, air conditioning, an automatic gearbox and tinted windows. Supplied with a V5 registration document and with all British and European taxes paid, the owner hopes to have obtained a fresh MoT test certificate prior to the auction. With an excess of power under ones right foot, this Chevelle represents excellent value in terms of pounds for power.
