Lot 531: 1987 Rolls-Royce 6,750cc Corniche II Convertible

Sale Of Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams & Butterfields (18th August 2006)

1987 Rolls-Royce 6,750cc Corniche II Convertible
The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a landmark car in the history of Rolls-Royce being the Crewe factory’s first unitary-construction model. The stylish and pricey two-door drophead version, finished by Mulliner, Park Ward in London, was introduced in 1967 and from 1971 became known as the Corniche, a name previously used by the company for a prewar exclusive Bentley prototype which never went into production. The well tried aluminum V8 engine was adopted, displacing 6,750cc, driving through a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three speed automatic gearbox sourced from General Motors. For the Corniche model power output was enhanced by about 10°providing also greater torque and giving a top speed in the order of 120mph. The independent coil spring suspension provided the smoothest of rides, complemented by a hydraulic self-leveling system to the rear. Perceived early shortcomings in the braking department were eliminated in 1972 with the introduction of ventilated disc brakes. Minor enhancements for the Corniche II of 1977 included alloy and rubber bumpers, an aluminum radiator, the addition of an oil cooler and, for the North American market, a driver’s airbag.

Delivered new on 1st July 1987 to John Gooch McGinnis, Rolls-Royce of Houston, Texas, this left hand drive Corniche II is presented in Royal Blue livery with blue-piped, beige leather interior and furnished with beige carpets and over-rugs, complemented by a beige top. General presentation of coachwork is good with only minor paint defects and chips commensurate with an original and low mileage car. Under bonnet detail is clean and well presented and invoices are on file reflecting recent routine maintenance and servicing by ACME Car Services in California. Upholstery would benefit from light cleaning and door cappings, although reflecting good color, have suffered some sun exposure. Two speedometer changes are recorded by the vendor and supported by supplier’s documentation and the vendor advises that the actual mileage from new is slightly in excess of 30,000 miles.

The present owner acquired the car in 1994 and was informed at that time that he was just the second owner. From 2001 to 2006 the car was in storage while its owner was a resident in Hawaii. Offered with this most original car is its owner’s wallet containing manual and early service history, together with crystal cocktail accessories, a tool kit and recent service invoices.
