Lot 201: 1983 Porsche 928S Auto Coupé
Porsche and Lotus Motor Cars, Bonhams (26th July 2008)
Unveiled at the Geneva Salon in 1977 and voted Car of the Year for 1978, the 928 was intended as an upmarket replacement for the long-running 911, but in the event Porsche’s rear-engined classic would outlive its younger sibling. The front-engined 928’s stylish hatchback body used aluminium for the doors, bonnet and front wings in the interests of weight saving, while ingenious impact-resistant ‘bumpers’ made of colour-matched plastic were incorporated in the nose and tail. The V8 engine - Porsche’s first - displaced 4.5 litres and produced 234bhp. A five-speed transaxle gearbox or three-speed automatic were the transmission options. In 1979 the 928S arrived boasting a 4.6-litre, engine equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and then in 1986 the model was further revised and restyled, becoming the 928 S4.
This exceptionally well preserved Porsche 928S is unusual in having covered only 38,000-or-so miles from new, having been in the current (second) owner’s hands for the past 22 years. Only 1,000 miles have been covered annually over the past 12 years and by Porsche standards the vehicle has only just completed running in. With 310bhp on tap and a top speed of 155mph, it boasts a level of performance that many of the more modern opposition would struggle to match, yet qualifies for reduced-premium classic vehicle insurance! The car has the automatic transmission option and factory-fitted electric sunroof, and comes complete with its original radio, handbook, tool kit, rear sun blinds and luggage cover. Finished in Kiln Red with beige leather interior, ‘LLZ 9552’ is offered with sundry maintenance records, current road fund licence, MoT to January 2009 and Swansea V5 registration document.
