Lot 675: c.1967 Lotus Elan S3 Drophead Coup
Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (3rd December 2007)
With the introduction of the improved S3 model in September 1965, the Elan became available as a fixed-head coup for the first time, having previously been sold only in drophead form with optional separate hardtop. Other civilising improvements included electric windows, re-designed dashboard and better trim. Powerful, light in weight and endowed with exceptional roadholding and handling, the Elan proved an immense commercial success for Lotus, slightly fewer than 9,000 being produced by the time production ceased in 1973.
This S3 was not first registered until 1980 and may have been used in competitions prior to that date, the body tub having been modified to accommodate a wider rear track. The car was purchased by the current owner at Bonhams Harrogate Sale on 22nd November 2005 (Lot 407). Restored in stages over a period of 14 years, the vehicle had enjoyed just two previous registered owners up to that time, the first of whom replaced the original engine while the second fitted new front discs and pads, track rod ends, suspension bushes, top ball joints, drive-shaft donuts, timing chain, hood and stainless-steel exhaust, invoices for which (totalling approximately 1,850) are available. During 2007 the car has been treated to an engine service and received a new fuel pump, battery and spare wheel. Finished in green/gold with black interior, the car is offered with sundry invoices, MoT to September 2006 and Swansea V5 registration document.
