Lot 213: 1982 Jaguar C-Type by Proteus

Proteus is one of the few firms making reproductions of classic cars to have established an international reputation for quality; indeed, several books on modern sports cars list Proteus as a maker in its own right.Only 54 original Jaguar C-Types were made and it is worth noting that the first three World Champions, Giuseppe Farina, Alberto Ascari and Juan-Manuel Fangio all bought them as road cars. It is not hard to understand why, the body was aerodynamic at a time when most of the opposition was 'streamlined', the C-Type had a spaceframe when such chassis were rare, and the engine was the most sophisticated production unit in the world. Then there was also the matter of wins at Le Mans, in the Tourist Trophy, the Reims 12 Hours to name a few. The qualities which made the C-Type so attractive to three of the greatest drivers in history, hold true today. In fact the use of later Jaguar components makes a Proteus version a more practical proposition than an original. The attention to detail in producing these cars is remarkable. It is important to note that they are very much 'hand built" using the same skill needed to produce the original cars; such skilled craftsmanship in this modern age is a dying art. Professionally built in 2002 this Proteus utilizes Jaguar suspension and features an accurate and correct aluminium tub with the lighter option of glass fibre panels front and rear. Finished in British Racing Green and sitting on wire wheels this example benefited from a good standard of build some years ago and a comprehensive history file is indeed available to view. It was described as in 'A1 condition with no obvious defects' by Andrew Morgan, an independent engineering assessor on the 12th January, 2004. The interior has been recently fitted to a high standard with leather trim and carpets. The cars owner, a collector of many years, has enjoyed it to the full with journeys around this country, various VSCC events and frequent trips down to Le Mans in France. It has never been raced and benefits from a full engine re-build in 1994 with suspension, brakes, carburettors and gearbox all receiving substantial attention in 1997. This represents a fantastic opportunity to experience the magic a Jaguar C-Type at a fraction of the price of the real thing.
