Lot 565: 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300CE Coupé
Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams (21st April 2008)
Produced between 1987 and 1993, the 300CE was built in limited numbers in the traditional manner of classic Mercedes-Benz coupés, being one of the very best specified and most luxuriously equipped models in the range. Outwardly similar to the 200CE Coupé, the 300CE was powered by a Type M103 2,960cc single-overhead-camshaft six producing 188bhp, an output good enough for a top speed in excess of 140mph in the case of the manual transmission version. Anti-lock brakes were standard on the larger ‘CE’, which was also available with the optional dohc, 24-valve M104 power unit. A 300CE Convertible, equipped from the start with the 24-valve engine, was an addition to the range for 1992.
A Type 103-engined model, this 300CE was purchased new at Mercedes-Benz agents, B & K Thomas (Nottingham) and serviced exclusively by them up to 2000, there being 24 stamps in the accompanying service booklet relating to this period. Since then independent specialists have maintained the car, which is presented in very good condition throughout, with excellent red paintwork and original beige leather interior. The vendor advises us that the engine is quiet and leak-free, and that the automatic transmission functions smoothly in both ‘sport’ and ‘economy’ modes. The electric sunroof, central locking and cruise control are likewise all reported to function correctly. Running well and driving exactly as it should, this exclusive and desirable Mercedes-Benz coupé is offered with all handbooks, expired MoTs, sundry recent invoices, current road fund licence, MoT to July 2008 and Swansea V5 registration document.
