Lot 231: 1985 Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole
Spirit of Motoring, Coys (29th September 2005)
The Mondial was conceived as the replacement for the 308 GT4 which was the first mid-engined V8 2+2 Berlinetta from Ferrari. Pininfarina were given the difficult task of designing a more stylish and practical body, and indeed they had to ask Ferrari if it was possible to increase the wheelbase by 100mm to improve passenger comfort without being detrimental to the roadholding. The final result made its debut at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, and took the name "Mondial" from a Ferrari 2 litre sports/race car from the early 1950's.The original Mondial had two valves per cylinder and due to American-led emissions regulations in the late 1970's and early eighties, the power output of the "two valver" was down to 214bhp. In response to this, Ferrari introduced the "Quattrovalvole" engine with a total of 32 valves on the V8 engine that brought the output up to 240bhp.55935 was one of only 216 right hand drive models imported to the UK and was ordered through Maranello Concessionaires. The car was ordered in 1985 and was finished in Blue Medio with Rosso and Magnolia trim and the extra option of an electric sunroof. Included in the sale are copies of all the bills going back to the Eighties, the comprehensive pile of invoices include service work carried out by known marque specialists Graypaul and JCT600. In recent times the car has been subject to the important cam belt change totalling 2,000. The car even still maintains its tools and torch pouch. These days the Mondial QV represents great value for money, having more than ample performance with much lower running costs than its V12 siblings and is not to be confused with the previous model, the Mondial 8, and much more room for passengers and luggage than any of the contemporary Ferrari models. The car offered for sale has had much attention paid to its mechanical maintenance over the years, and has a service history from new. The relatively low mileage is reflected in its overall condition. This represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire one of these stylish and rare right hand drive Ferrari Berlinettas.
