Lot 144: 1960 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet RHD
Auto Moto d'Epoca, Coys (28th October 2006)
Introduced in mid-1959, the Mercedes-Benz Wlll 220 series was a natural progression from the 220S range of 1956; the latter had been the first saloon series from Mercedes to use a unitary construction bodyshell and this was carried on with its successor, together with all independent suspension and the 2,195cc single overhead camshaft, straight six engine. All models, however, were larger inside and out with a greater abundance of chromework and distinctive finned rear wings emphasising the size of the cars. Four basic models were available, the 105bhp 220, the 124bhp 220S with twin Solex carburettors, the 134bhp 220SE with fuel injection and the 170bhp 300SE with 2,996cc engine: these last three cars were also distinguishable by chrome bars fixed above the front and rear bumpers, and combined headlight, sidelight and indicator units behind glass cowls. In addition there were the much sleeker, two door 220SE and 300SE Coupé and Cabriolet models, sharing similar styling to the saloons but with exposed twin headlights, rounded rather than finned rear wings and two inches extra width. With either body style and standard four-speed manual gearbox, the 220 was capable in SE guise of 108mph with 0-60mph reached in 12.8 seconds, while respective figures for the 300SE were 115mph and around 10 seconds. Automatic transmission was optional. This beautifully restored right hand drive example was purchased in England by its Italian owners in 1984. It has been completely restored by two ex-factory Mercedes Benz mechanics. Any parts requiring replacement were exchanged with original Mercedes Benz parts. It has been regularly serviced by them and is presented today in excellent condition. The car has been awarded 'Targa Oro' the highest accolade awarded by A.S.I the Italian motoring organisation and is accompanied by both pre and post restoration photos.
