Lot 218B: 1973 Bristol 411
Coys at Ascot, Coys (30th September 2006)
The Bristol 411 is part of a distinguished Anglo-American tradition which includes such great names as Railton, Jensen and Brough Superior. It is, of course, the wedding of a smooth, understressed, American engine (in this case from Chrysler) with a British chassis and British standards of craftsmanship. The result of combining the best aspects of automotive engineering from both sides of the Atlantic invariably makes for an unusually competent car, and the Bristol 411 is no exception. Indeed, many Bristol enthusiasts will argue that the 411 was not only the best car in its class when first made, it is also the best car Bristol has ever made. Powerful, smooth, quiet and well-handling, the 411 was built to fastidious standards of quality while its hand-crafted coachwork exudes quiet authority. Its lines have a timeless elegance which few cars of the period can match. That level of quality, combined with Chrysler's excellent engine and automatic transmission make the 411 virtually a well-appointed boardroom on wheels. Not for nothing was it advertised as The Businessman's Express. Today's example represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a Bristol with not only the ability to take unleaded petrol but also the benefit of a part fitted stainless-steel exhaust. With just 3 registered former keepers and a VG registration certificate, this running and complete Bristol represents an excellent project for the winter months ahead.
