Lot 222: 1963 Porsche 356B T6 Cabriolet
Sports, Touring, Historic Road and Racing Cars, Coys (30th April 2006)
Throughout 356B production, Porsche introduced some of the most significant developments ever made on the 356. Improvements were focused upon handling, ride and refinement as well as their little sports cars sparkling performance. The reliability was further enhanced whilst Porsche also made a few subtle aesthetic tweaks, all of which upped the original cars appeal and firmly established it as by far the best car in its class. The 356B also marked the arrival of a new body style, the Roadster, which replaced Porsche's much-loved Speedster and subsequent Convertible D. With the B, Porsche introduced subtly revised bodywork for the 356, the cars built between September 1959 and August 1961 often being referred to as T-5 versions. They nevertheless retained all the hallmarks that had made the 356 great. The rear seats were lowered to optimise headroom and also split centrally in order to facilitate three passengers and their luggage - should such a feat be required. KGJ 361A, a later T6 version, was delivered on the 13th February 1963 from the factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen to a Mr. Lindsey of Johannesburg. It was then owned by a, clearly talented, journalist for many years in South Africa. It was then imported into the U.K. in August, 1999 whereupon some further works were undertaken. The car's new soft-top was fitted in October 2000. The frame and hood were supplied new by Christof Tanner of Switzerland to Porsches original design. Hood and fitting cost approx £6,000. New carpets have been fitted throughout but the majority of the car is very original. The engine, gearbox and body serial numbers are as per the Porsche Certificate. It is described by the reluctant vendor as being a very reliable car and could certainly be driven every day. It has never been driven in the winter in the UK or on salty roads and as a result of this, the car is and has been, rust free.
