Lot 003: 1956 BENTLEY S1 SALOON
An Auction Of Fine Collectors' Motor Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (16th April 2008)
Typifying the growing economic confidence of the mid 1950s, the Bentley S1 was larger, faster and more boldly styled than its MKVI predecessor. Introduced in 1955, it was underpinned by a new cruciform-braced box-section chassis equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and servo-assisted four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a twin SU carburettor fed 4887cc straight-six engine allied to standard-fit four-speed automatic transmission, the S1 could waft along at over 100mph. Once affectionately described as "a veritable country club on wheels", the model was trimmed with the finest hides, carpets and wood veneers. However, despite the excellence of the 'basic' car, there remained a core of Bentley enthusiasts who found it too anonymous. Reputedly one of only 145 standard-wheelbase S1 chassis fitted with coachbuilt bodies, this wonderfully elegant four-door saloon is the work of Freestone & Webb. Supplied new to P. Wilson Esq. of Yardley Hastings, chassis B289AP was road registered as 'NNV 798' on 23rd June 1956. Bought by D. Pollock Esq. of Old Windsor some seven years later, it was briefly registered to The Best Car Co Ltd before entering the current Surrey-based ownership on 30th July 1969. Coming from a deceased estate, the Bentley seems to have covered some 34,000 miles between 1975 and 2002 (or so sundry accompanying expired MOT certificates imply). Other paperwork on file reveals that it was maintained by Rolls-Royce's London Service Centre, Haines & Hall Ltd and latterly David Haines & Sons Ltd. Garage stored for the last six years, it is now running and driving but in need of restoration. A worthwhile project, 'NNV 798' is offered for sale with continuation logbook, V5 registration document and copy chassis cards. PLEASE NOTE: This lot is accompanied by an old type V5 registration document. t
