Lot 359: Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Hardtop Coupe
Motorcycle and Motorcars, Bonhams & Butterfields (14th November 2009)
This tidy resto-mod Malibu hardtop has just completed an owner-performed frame-off rebuild. The chassis was epoxy coated, all mounts were replaced, and all chassis components, including traction bars, frame stabilizers, steering box, tie rod ends, coil spring and shock absorbers were replaced. Air shocks were added in the rear. The 396 engine was taken down to the bare block and rebuilt with top-of-the-line components at a total cost of $15,000. It is fitted with a genuine 6-71 supercharger with matched pulley and drive system by Blower Drive Service, a BDS-matched Iskenderian solid lifter race cam with triple valve springs, MSD distributor and matched twin Edelbrock 600 cfm carburetors. The BDS computer model calculated its output at 607bhp with about 500 pound-feet of torque. It drives through a rebuilt Muncie M21 four-speed with Hurst Competition Plus shifter and 3.27 PosiTraction rear end. Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers exhaust through three-inch tailpipes.
The front brakes have been converted to discs, with power booster, dual master cylinder and proportioning valve. American Racing period-authentic five-spoke wheels are fitted with Mickey Thompson street/strip tires in the rear and radials in front.
The original front and rear bench seats have been retained, while door panels, hardware, kick panels, headliner, weatherstripping and windlace are all new, as is the custom pile carpet. The trunk is also nicely carpeted. A new Painless Performance wiring system was installed, with capacity for additional power features if desired.
This car was built to drive and enjoy. The Navy Blue paint is very nice, though exhibits a few nicks and chips. There are a few details to finish, many of which will be completed by time of sale. The original AM radio accompanies the car, but is not installed. Also included are a new dashboard lens and chrome bezel. The speedometer is currently inoperative and will need a new drive gear.
Nicely rebuilt, very clean and very fast, this Malibu hardtop has all of the difficult and expensive work completed. It represents excellent value for a car needing only modest detailing.
