The MGB, first seen in 1963, could not have been more different that the MGA. Although not as startling as the MGA was to pre-war MG T Series Midget enthusiasts, the B was a new breed of motor car. With is unitary construction, timeless styling and bullet proof mechanics, the MGB would provide the basis of the MG range for the next two decades.
In 1965 a GT version was also launched, instantly increasing the appeal of the model to a far wider audience. With a fold away rear bench and generous luggage area, the BGT made a great little tourer and kept you and your luggage dry.
The other big and most important change to the MGB was the adoption of American specified ride height and impact bumpers across the board in 1974. This major change splits the MGB/BGT into two distinct categories, with each model appealing to different buyers. The traditionalists will plump for the chrome bumper model, while the newer model appeals to the younger buyer, who may not have been born when the chrome bumper car was available new.
Offered here a 1972, chrome bumper, example of the BGT, which is said to have benefited from a rebuilt engine, new clutch, new fuel pump and new battery in the recent past. The car has the 1800, B Series engine and 4-speed + overdrive gearbox, sits on wire wheels and is complete with both MoT and historic tax through to February 2009.
Finished in Damson red with black interior, the car is said to be a sound example, which drives well and is thought, by the vendor, to have covered a genuine 50,000 miles.
