Lot 424: c.1964 Motom 60 ‘S’ Sports Ultra-Lightweight
Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (9th September 2006)
Founded in Italy in 1947 and active until the early 1970s, Motom was unusual among European manufacturers of mopeds and ultra-lightweight motorcycles in favouring the four-stroke engine. Pressed-steel spine frames were another Motom trademark although, as time progressed, tubular frames were introduced and proprietary Peugeot and Züdapp two-stroke engines adopted. This 60cc Motom was obviously aimed the younger motorcyclist with sporting pretensions, boasting café-racer styling in the form of clip-on handlebars, rest-set footrests and ‘racing’ seat. The machine has the overhead-valve engine and three-speed gearbox, and comes with a set of new tyres/tubes of the correct size. Offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed, it represents an opportunity to acquire a European four-stroke moped of a type rarely seen in the UK.
