Blue Crush was certainly the top chick flick of 2002, but represents a pronounced cultural shift from movies made in the past for this target demographic. The guys in the movie are largely extraneous with the possible exception of the heroine’s love interest. The story involves four strong female characters, independent, athletic woman fending for themselves in Hawaii where they can be close to their one true passion, surfing. Lookout boys, it’s a brave new world.
