Lot 008: 1991 BMW Z1
Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (10th October 2007)
Founded on January 1st 1985 as a R&D think-tank free from commercial pressures, BMW Technology GmbH was tasked with developing technologies that challenged the accepted basics of automotive design. Headed by Ulrich Bez, the new subsidiary's first challenge was to build a car that encapsulated 'Freedom on Four Wheels'. The resultant embryonic Z1 was never intended to go beyond the concept stage. However, the intervention of BMW-AG chairman Eberhard von Kuenheim saw it green-lit for production. Introduced at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Z1 caused a furore. Built around a galvanised steel spaceframe with fully detachable composite resin body panels, it boasted far greater torsional rigidity than its Z3 successor. This extra strength was partially derived from its zinc coating (which was monitored to a specific micron tolerance) and bonded floor. The latter also doubled as an undertray channelling airflow towards the specially shaped exhaust tail box (inverted wing section) which in turn provided meaningful downforce at speed. Always intended as a low volume model (just 8,000 were produced), the Z1 inevitably raided its parent company's parts bin. Borrowing the front suspension design (albeit with a wider track), 2496cc straight-six engine (170bhp / 164lbft) and Getrag 260-5 gearbox from its 325i cousin, the two-seater employed a unique semi-trailing arm Z-axle rear suspension set-up. Lauded by the press for its excellent handling and roadholding, the BMW was reputedly capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds and on to 140mph. A tell-tale reminder from its 'Freedom' project days, the Z1's electrically powered doors could be made to disappear inside the 'sills' even while on the move. Finished in black with black / charcoal grey leather upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "very good" (interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment) condition. Said to have been previously owned by Robin Van Der Laan, a former captain of Derby County Football Club, 'JAZ 5195' is further understood to have covered approximately 64,000km from new. Apparently benefiting from "an alarm, imobiliser and new hood", this striking BMW sportscar is offered for sale with current MOT certificate and road tax. PLEASE NOTE: The vendor has informed us that this vehicle now has an MOT until October 2008 and that he has obtained the proof of Robin Van Der Laan's ownership.
