Lot 136: 1970 Alfa Romeo 1600 GTV/GTA
The Sport Car Auction, Coys (9th December 2006)
First shown at the 1965 Amsterdam and Geneva motor shows, the Autodelta prepped Giulia sported the soon to be legendary 'GTA' suffix. The 'A' was short for 'Allegerita', or lightweight; an apt description of the Autodelta Giulia. A considerably slimmed down version of the unitary chassis was covered by aluminium body panels, shaving almost 300 kg off the Giulia's weight. The engine was similar to the unit as used in the TZ, complete with the twin spark injection. For homologation purposes a minimum of 500 examples had to be produced, postponing the GTA's track debut to 1966. Fielded by Autodelta, which was now absorbed by Alfa Romeo, and privateers, the nimble Giulias proved an immediate success. In the opening round of the championship at Monza, GTA's filled the first seven places. Andrea de Adamich scored four victories and claimed the title. A total of 200 wins were scored in the racer's maiden season followed by hundreds more in the following seasons with the crowning glory of a hat trick of overall wins in the European Touring Car Championship, 1966-67-68. Two years later the similarly successful 1300 GTA Junior was introduced for the under 1300cc class. This car is based on a 1970 Alfa Romeo GTV. It comes with ONS-paperwork and has been uprated in the early 90's to GTA specifications. Finished in Autodelta-livery and restaured as necessary it was only used sparingly and presents itself in excellent condition.Weighing 940 kgs with an engine output of 162 kW this surely is a competitive entrant to the various rallies it is eligible for.
