Lot 274: 1921 Levis 211cc Two Stroke

Motorcycle manufacturers from 1911 to 1940, Levis had enjoyed particular success in the Isle of Man TT Races in the early 1920’s, finishing 1-2-3 in the 1920 Junior TT, taking 2nd place in 1921 and winning the 1922 Lightweight TT. These successes gave the Stechford, Birmingham, factory a tremendous sales boost and the two-stroke, 62x70mm, 211cc model was one of the most popular mid-20’s two-stroke lightweights. This example was first registered in Birmingham on 12th January 1921 and the model’s popularity with the fairer sex is confirmed by ownership by Miss Dorothy P Mitchell in Castle Bromwich in 1925, the machine then passing into the ownership of Hugh Brookes of Chesham in 1945. A receipt on file for £3 records the purchase of the bike by Stafford East on 13th September 1954, precisely 54 years ago on sale day. This machine appears to be original in all major respects and is complete with leather tool pannier, belt case, Senspray carburettor and a Bonniksen 0-50mph speedometer. It is complete with a rear number plate and tail lamp (not illustrated). The machine is offered with an old buff logbook dating from 1925, a 1920 copy of Levis Hints & Tips, some Levis transfers and a Swansea V5 registration document. Following a long period in storage this popular lightweight will benefit from the usual careful recommissioning.
