Lot 27: Alfa Romeo GIULIA SPRINT
Vintage, Classic & Collectors's Motor Vehicles, BCA (27th November 2007)
Despite considerable Italian government investment in post-war reconstruction, the late 1940s and early 1950s were a difficult time for Alfa Romeo. Although the new 1900 Series had been introduced in 1950, it was still highly priced and it was clearly evident that a more affordable range of cars was required. It was to be the Giulietta which was to bring the pleasure of Alfa Romeo ownership to a wider market. Introduced in 1955, the Giulietta range comprised Alena Spyder models, powered by a 1.3-litre twin-cam engine which provided a most spirited performance, the Berlina TI having a top speed approaching 100mph. A station-wagon version was also available and the Giulietta range was eagerly received and sold extremely well.Continuing the theme, Giulia models were to follow, powered by a 1.6-litre engine. With delightful Bertone styling, the Sprint version made for a most desirable motor car when it appeared in 1962. Noted for its excellent handling, the Giulia Sprint boasted a 5-speed gearbox and finned drum brakes. A small number were imported to the UK, being converted to RHD by agents, Ruddspeed of Worthing.Traditionally finished in Alfa red, this Giulia Sprint dates from 1963 and has been in storage for approximately three years. Unfortunately, little is known of its history although it is believed to have had four former owners. Following storage, a new battery and general recommissioning will be required. Nevertheless, this represents an opportunity to acquire a desirable sporting Alfa for a very modest sum.
