Lot 542: 1929 Morgan Aero Sports
Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams (11th July 2008)
Fitted with Anzani Summit engine number ‘CCW1678’, which it retains to this day, chassis number ‘1132A’ was first registered ‘UY 4724’ to the Morgan Motor Co on 22nd January 1929. The car was invoiced two days later and despatched on the 29th of that month to Maude’s Motor Mart, Norwich. Little is known of the Aero’s subsequent history until it turned up in Hertfordshire in 1950 registered to one Martin G Foulger. The car subsequently passed through a number of hands as evidenced by the accompanying old-style logbook, before being offered for sale by dealer André Baldet, of Northampton in 1966.
It was then bought by Mick Courage, who was accompanied at time of purchase by recognised marque authority, Chris Booth of the Morgan Museum in Rolveden, Kent (see photograph on file). Mick Courage did a lot of work on the Morgan, using it for his honeymoon as well as rallies, before selling it to the American Ed Jameson in 1976. Jameson placed the car in the hands of one W Tolley, of Newton Abbot, Devon for renovation. Tolley would appear to have been working on three Morgans for Jameson as evidenced by bills of file dating from the late 1980s/early 1990s totalling over £10,999, many of which relate to ‘UY 4724’. The chassis has been re-tubed and much of the panelling replaced. All the chains, sprockets and bevel gears are new, as are the wheel bearings and sliders.
The present owner bought the Morgan after the Jameson sale and decided to go through the car once again, removing the body from the chassis and subjecting the vehicle to a thorough examination. New flywheels were made and new bearings, pistons and valves fitted to the engine, which after balancing is reported as particularly quiet and smooth. In addition, the clutch was relined, the magneto overhauled and new tyres fitted. Only a minimal mileage has been covered since the completion of the foregoing in 2003.
Representing a rare opportunity to acquire an all-matching-numbers Aero of the late Vintage period, and thus eligible for a wide variety of prestigious historic motoring events, the car is offered with the aforementioned old-style logbook, sundry restoration invoices, current MoT/road fund licence and Swansea V5 registration document.
