Lot 411: 1920 Alldays Allon 2¾hp
Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (9th September 2006)
A firm that could trace its origins as far back as the 17th Century, the Alldays & Onions Pneumatic Engineering Company of Birmingham built its first automobile in 1898 and its first motorcycle in 1903. Car production ended around 1918 but that of motorcycles continued until the late 1920s. Early and late types were marketed as Alldays but from 1915 to 1924 the firm’s products were known as Allons. The bulk of production consisted of the 293cc (2¾hp) Allon two-stroke. Introduced shortly before the outbreak of WWI, the Allon was one of the first British machines to feature a sloping top tube, post-WWI versions being among the earliest to adopt saddle tanks. This Alldays Allon features a two-speed gearbox and chain-cum-belt transmission. In 1996 it was ridden by the immediately preceding owner in the VMCC John O’Groats to Lands End Run. Since that time the engine has been rebuilt by Peter Dawson Engineering of Pontefract, the forks overhauled by Percival Brothers & Webb in Dudley and the fuel tank professionally restored. The machine was purchased by the vendor at Brooks’ Sale at Beaulieu on 28th July 1999 and since then has formed part of his private museum collection, being maintained by its enthusiast owner and used regularly on a private estate. It is offered with old-style continuation logbook, restoration correspondence/invoice, expired MoTs (1987-1999) and Swansea V5 document.
