Lot 210: 1991 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet

Sports Car Auction, Coys (22nd July 2006)

When in November 1975 Porsche launched the 924, it marked a radical departure for the company; not only did it have a front engine, it was also water rather than air-cooled. The 1,984cc four cylinder, single camshaft engine, producing 125bhp at 5,800rpm and 1221b.ft at 3,500rpm via Bosch injection, was mated to a four-speed transaxle. Beneath the 2+2 coupé body, the steel monocoque sported independent suspension, allowing excellent road holding. Answering criticism against the Volkswagen derived engine, Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982, sporting a 2.5 Litre 4 cylinder Porsche engine which produced 163 bhp which was basically half a V8 engine from the 928. Bodywork modifications to the basic 924 shell included wider wheel arches at the front and back, giving the car a much more aggressive stance. Over the next few years, Porsche offered a wider choice of engine options: the basic 163 bhp was offered alongside the Turbo version with 250 bhp, and a mid range model, the S2 was offered from 1990 with a torquey 3 Litre 4-cylinder engine, producing no less than 211 bhp. This mid range engine was and still is considered by many as the best of the bunch, offering the reliability and fuel economy of the smaller engined model with nearly as much power as the Turbo models, but without their reliability problems. The open top convertible version was launched the same year, providing open top motoring for this very popular model. The white Cabriolet on offer here has led a very cosseted life form new. First registered in April 1991, it has had only 3 owners from new who covered a mere 66.300 km, which means in Porsche circles that the engine is hardly run in as these engines are reported to last for 300.000 km without a need for a rebuild, provided they are looked after properly. This example has certainly been looked after as it has a full Porsche service history, has only seen summer use and was never used in winter as the owner has always de-registered the car each autumn. We are informed that the car is completely original and boasts such creature comforts as electric windows, electric seats, air conditioning, black leather seats, electric hood, heated seats and an immobiliser. The paint is still very fresh and has never had any touching up.A rare opportunity to purchase a very well looked after example of this popular and practical Porsche model.
