Lot 018: Ferrari Mondial 3.2 QV

The Mondial was introduced as the Mondial 8 in 1980. It was the first Ferrari to depart from the company's familiar 3-digit naming scheme and was initially powered by the same mid/rear-mounted 214bhp 3-litre V8 as used in the Dino 308 GT4. The chassis was also based on the 308 GT4, but with a 100mm longer wheelbase at 2650mm. The suspension was double wishbones all around.Following some criticism of its relatively modest performance, Ferrari introduced a more potent version during the summer of 1982. Known as the Mondial Quattrovalvole, the QV engines were fitted with four-valve cylinder heads that not only increased power to 240bhp but also made it easier to comply with US emissions legislation. By 1985 the engine had grown to 3.2-litres and the output was now 270bhp while the car's weight distribution was changed enough for it to classify as a true mid-engine design. Performance was now more than respectable, the 0-60 dash coming up in just 6.3 secs on the way to a top speed of 148mph. Styling was refreshed with body colour bumpers and new wheels. When production ceased in 1993, some 6,800 Mondials had rolled off the Maranello production line. Today the Mondial is considered one of the marque's most reliable, inexpensive to maintain and practical models due to its proven drivetrain and four seat accommodation. First registered in August 1986, this Mondial 3.2 QV has had only two owners from new, the current vendor having acquired it in July 1988. Kept as part of a small private collection, it has only covered 44,500 miles with a full service history to warrant this mileage. Said to be in very good condition throughout and to drive extremely well, it has an MOT until November 2007. Entry into the fabled prancing horse club doesn't come much cheaper than this.
