Lot 127: 1952 Bentley Mk VI by James Young

Spring Auction, Coys (20th April 2005)

1952 Bentley Mk VI by James Young
Announced in May 1946, the Mk VI marked a significant change in policy for Bentley by being the company's first wholly produced car rather than the body being produced by an independent coachbuilder. Featuring a strong channel section chassis with independent wishbone/coil spring front suspension and a live, leaf-sprung rear axle and drum brakes were fitted all round. Power was provided by the pre-war B60 4,257cc six cylinder engine - with overhead inlet/side exhaust valves and belt rather than gear-driven dynamo and water pump, both major changes from previous practice - sufficient to propel the Bentley, via twin SU carburettors, to 90mph. Notably, prototype tests of the Mk VI were conducted during the war, often by cabinet ministers and military officers. However some Mk VI chassis were bodied by specialised coachbuilders such as this particular James Young example from 1952. The car features elegant two door body work in Ivory with a crimson leather interior. 9052 PE is described by the vendor to be in excellent condition as it under went a significant restoration, completed in 2003. The vehicle was completely stripped and all body mounts were examined and replaced where necessary. All brightwork was re-chromed and all woodwork removed and refurbished. The body was taken back to bare metal and resprayed in the original Ivory. Door linings, upholstery and instruments were also restored and the carpets were remade by specialists. All work was carried out by the vendor - which has been in his ownership for the last 33 years. The car has a current MoT valid until March 2006 and comes with bills and photographs of the work carried out. 9052 PE has been lovingly restored and is now ready to be enjoyed.
