Lot 031: 1953 HARLEY DAVIDSON VL

Harley Davidson introduced a telescopic fork to their 61 and 74 cubic inch twins during 1949, giving machines thus equipped the title Hydra-Glide, interestingly, the loss of Indian as a major rival and the combination of a sprung saddle, telescopic forks, long wheelbase and "balloon" tyres led Harley to dismiss the need for rear springing until 1958 and the introduction of the Duo-Glide series. The Hydra-Glides are arguably the most attractive of Harley's post war tourers with clean flowing lines. This example has benefited from a restoration carried outbetween 1998 and 1999 by Matts Engineering at considerable expense and is offered today because the vendor needs the space. The "shovelhead" equipped engine is housed in "Hydra-Glide" rigid frame and transmits its power via a toothed belt drive. A disc brake is fitted to the front end ensuring that the machine can be stopped effectively. The machine features a foot operated gear change, a feature that was only became available as an option from 1951, chrome rear carrier and custom air cleaner. Attractively presented with red and cream paintwork with an abundance of polished alloy and chrome, it is offered with a Swansea V5C and a comprehensive file including a photographic record of the restoration, together with lists and costs of the restoration.
