Lot 16: AUSTIN SEVEN RUBY MK II
Classic & Historic Automobile, BCA (2nd October 2007)
Following its introduction in 1922, the Austin Seven was to prove a tremendous success and gave thousands of British families the opportunity to own an economical and affordable motor car of good quality rather than having to settle for a motorcycle combination or one of the crude cyclecars that had proliferated in previous years. Rapidly becoming an integral part of the British way of life, the little 'Seven' was to prove quite classless with people from all walks of life owning one. Throughout the history of the motor car, few vehicles have engendered more affection than the baby Austin and, by the time production ceased in 1939, more than 290,000 had been produced. In August 1934, together with the rest of the Austin range, the Seven was restyled and featured an elongated bonnet with the radiator now placed under a cowl, whilst the spare wheel was now enclosed by a metal cover, these modifications giving a far more modern line and ensuring the Seven remained at the forefront of the small car class. 1936 was to see several modifications to the Seven range, which included the crankshaft benefiting from a third bearing, the engine now developing 17bhp. The saloon was now designated 'Mk II' and this guise was to continue until production ceased in early 1939.Dating from the penultimate year of manufacture, this Ruby Mk II is correctly finished in Dove Grey with black wings and is understood to have been refurbished around ten years ago. Described as in good mechanical order throughout, it is seemingly to original specification, save for the fitment of flashing indicators which are virtually essential on a pre-war car in today's road conditions. The vehicle was apparently laid up between 1980 and 1994 and was bought by the present owner during March that year, subsequently undergoing restoration. Since then it has only seen light use. Following a period of inactivity, the car was checked over and MOT'd at the beginning of this summer and a new battery installed, and is now ready to provide enjoyment to its new owner. The car has been known to the Austin Seven Owners' Club for over thirty years and is to be offered for sale with various bills etc., a V5 document and MOT certificate current until 10th May 2008.
