Lot 331: 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Three Position Drophead - Coachwork by HJ Mulliner
True Greats, Coys (5th December 2007)
In the 1930s, Rolls-Royce set new standards with its Phantom series. It was achieved not by making great technical breakthroughs, but by using the very best of proven technology. One could argue that various Hispano-Suizas had more advanced specifications, but one has to note that many of them are now fitted with Rolls-Royce gearboxes. There were no weaknesses in the cars which Rolls-Royce made which is why, when the company began to use the slogan, 'The Best Car In The World', it was regarded as measured opinion backed by solid collateral. The Phantom II has been described as 'the coachbuilder's dream' and some superb bodies were created for the model. Majority opinion says that those created by Mulliner are among the very best and that the company achieved its greatest work on the Phantom II. Originally sold to Myers & Burrell Ltd. in York, this most handsome motor car - and to many people, one of the most practical of bodywork designs, being a Sedanca or full convertible with wind-up windows rather than side curtains - is also a most practical touring car and it is featured in Rolls-Royce - The Derby Phantoms, by Dalton Watson. Complete with original fittings and excellent driving capabilities, it is finished in the most elegant of colour combinations of deep maroon with tan hood and tan leather interior.
