Lot 105: Standard Flying 8

The Flying Eight was the smallest member of the Standard Flying family with a side valve 102cc long stroke (100 mm) engine to keep it in the British 8hp taxation class which calculated the annual licence payable according to cylinder area. A single Solex carburettor was used and the engine could produce 28 bhp at 4000 rpm. [1]. Drive was to the rear wheels through a 3 speed synchromesh gearbox. The suspension was independent at the front with a transverse leaf spring. A top speed of around 65 mph was attainable. Brakes were cable operated using the Bendix system. The car had a separate chassis and was initially available as a saloon and four seat tourer. These were joined by the drophead coup� in late 1939, but very few coup�s were built before the outbreak of World War II, which halted car production. Offered here is, what is believed to, one of only two 1939 Flying 8 Drophead Coupe's still extant. This car was discovered, by the vendor, in a barn in 1989 and was acquired in exchange for one months stud fees for his bull. It was eventually put back on the road in 1995. Prior to this, it had last been in use in 1959. The car is offered in excellent condition having been fully restored and rebuilt, apart from the engine, which is said to be in good order. It is equipped with the 1021ccc, four-cylinder engine, which drives through a 3-speed, manual gearbox. A lovely little car offering outstanding value for money.
