Lot 228: 1988 Jaguar 6.0 Litre Lister Coupe

The XJ-S had been under development since 1968 and as a 2+2 fixed head coupe was intended as a replacement for the now legendary E-type. From the beginning it was only available with the V12 engine which gave excellent performance with 0-60mph being dispatched in a very respectable 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 150mph. Jaguar's V12 was one of the premiere power plants of the 1970's and 1980's, it was originally designed for a Le Mans car, the ill-fated Jaguar XJ13. There have been many incarnations of the XJS, but one of the most desirable and potent is the 6.0 litre Lister coupe. Lister Cars started in the early 1950's, when Brian Lister raced a Cooper-MG and then an 1100cc Tojeiro-JAP, made MG and Bristol powered sports cars for Archie Scott-Brown to drive, culminating in the 1957 Lister-Jaguar. By 1959, Lister had produced thirty-four Jaguar and Chevrolet engined Listers. The well-known Jaguar tuner, with a long history of technical collaboration with Jaguar was revived in 1986 with Brian Lister's permission. Apart from producing ten Lister-Jaguar replicas, Laurence Pearce and his Lister Cars of Leatherhead, Surrey, extensively modified 96 Jaguar XJS coupes with V12 engines enlarged from standard 5.3 to 6 and even 7-litres and appropriately up rated suspension and brakes. Offered here is one such Lister-engineered Jaguar XJS from 1988 with the 6.0 litre engine finished in blue with an un-marked cream leather interior piped in blue. Chassis number 13 has been lowered and fitted with striking gold alloys with extended body work the car has real road presence. The car was originally the WP Automotive (Lister) demonstrator and was subsequently sold to Cameron Hall, owners of Newcastle United. The car was owned by Cameron Hall for two years before being sold back to WP Automotive.The car is supplied with a V5 document, old MoT's dating back to 1998 and an MoT certificate valid until March 2007, an original Lister leather manual and various service invoices, including a bill from Don Law, a Jaguar specialist, when £9400 was spent on the engine and transmission. The power output from Lister tuned engine is in the region of 450 bhp. Reported to be in good shape all round with very good oil pressure and superb brakes, this rare and powerful beast is ready to be used in anger.
