Lot 507: 1938 Ford Express Pickup
Sale Of Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams & Butterfields (18th August 2006)
In 1938 Ford significantly changed their truck line up, the biggest change since 1932. Most dramatic was the all new cab and sheet metal replacing the 1935 design. The new oval grille incorporated the first front opening hood in the industry.
Of greater importance was the introduction of the One-Tonner, Ford's answer to the competition. Not since the TT truck, had Ford made a one ton model. It was a scaled down 1 ½ ton not a built up ½ ton. The wheel base was 1 foot less than the smallest 1 ½
ton Truck. In addition the pickup box was an all new design, the first since 1931.
The 'Express' had a wheel base of 122" and was powered by a 85 HP V-8, coupled with a 4 – speed transmission and was very happy at 50 + mph. One – Tonners also had a larger radiator.
This truck was originally a North Carolina tobacco farm vehicle. The low mileage truck was purchased in the 1980's by a collector from West Virginia who restored it about ten years ago. It is painted the original black with correct green leatherette upholstery. The truck has just received a tune up and a major service at Pollock Auto Restoration in Pottstown, PA.
This 'adult size' pickup runs down the road very well and would be a useful and scenic addition to any country estate.
