Lot 146: 1958 Bentley S1 Touring Saloon
True Greats, Coys (30th November 2006)
First introduced in 1955, the Bentley S-Type (retrospectively known as the S1) was a larger car than the R-Type that it replaced which was really a late 40's design from the steel rationing era. The S1's power came from an enlarged version of the R-Type's six cylinder, overhead inlet/side valve exhaust type head, now of 4887cc which propelled the car on to 120 mph with the 0-60 dash completed in 12.9 seconds. Early cars were available with manual transmission, however most cars had a four speed automatic gearbox, power steering was only available from 1956 which was much needed. The beautiful shape of the S1 used the cars length to its full advantage with the interior featuring all of the usual appointments expected in a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. 661 UXM is probably the best restored example of Bentley's famous S1 standard touring saloon in the UK today. The extent of this magnificent motor car's restoration is a testament to the time, effort and money needed to restore such an elaborate motor car to near factory-new condition. Restored by one of the United States' most respected restorers, Jerry Gross in Connecticut, this motor car has had a literally no expense spared restoration. The list of works done is far too extensive to detail in full, but needless to say include engine, gearbox, paintwork, glass replacement, wood cappings, hide upholstery, carpets and headlining, taking many years and many, many thousands of dollars to produce a stunning concours example. Being a late model with the more desirable power steering, this exquisite motor car is a joy to drive, be it travelling in town or touring, this car offers the ultimate in 1950's luxury, quality and design. Now registered in the UK with new MOT certificate, finished in Rolls-Royce shell grey and tudor with matching tan hide upholstery.
