Lot 028: 1925 FIAT 505 B TORPEDO TOURER
Motor Car Sale, H&H Sales Limited (24th May 2006)
Introduced in 1919, the 505 was in essence a scaled-up version of the 501 (Fiat's first new design since the Great War). Like its smaller sibling, the 505 was based on a simple but effective leaf-sprung, ladder-frame chassis powered by a torquey four-cylinder, sidevalve engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox complete with multiplate wet clutch. But whereas the 501 made do with 1460cc, the 505's ten foot wheelbase was deemed to merit 2299cc. No mean performer compared to its peers, later 'B' specification 505s benefited from four wheel brakes, electric start and a squarer (Rolls Royce-esque) radiator.
Finished in maroon over black with part-worn brown leather upholstery, this particular example dates from May 1925 and is believed to be one of the last 505Bs built. Variously described by the vendor as being in "sound" (bodywork), "solid" (paintwork), "good" (gearbox, electrical equipment, wheels / tyres) or "very good" (engine, chassis) condition, we understand that IF 5646 was first registered in County Cork and did not migrate to the UK until 1965. Reputed to have had just six owners from new, its original, four-seater touring body apparently underwent a careful restoration in 1980 during which great pains were taken to preserve as much of the wood frame as possible together with all the original aluminium panels (and the auxiliary windscreen for rear seat passengers). While more recent work is said to have included an extensive engine overhaul and the installation of a "new radiator costing around ú1,000". Used on many a navigational rally in the past, the Fiat has reportedly won the Inter Register Rally Championship three times and amassed numerous VSCC awards. A very rare sight today despite a total production run of 17,753 505s, this handsome Vintage tourer is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until January 31st 2007 and history file including: logbook, VSCC buff form, list of date stamps, list of keepers, export/import documents, letter confirming the first owner and handbook.
