Lot 156: Mercedes-Benz 280SE Saloon
Classic - Collectors and Historic Motor Cars, Barons (9th December 2008)
The 108 S Class Saloon was the second incarnation using the S title and came without the sharp fins, which had identified the 220S/220SE an the later 220 and 230S. The 280SE came with the new, 7 bearing engine developed for the SL, although the saloon had twin Solex carburettors rather than the injection of the Cabrio and Coupe.
This example of a 280SE was originally exported to Capetown, South Africa, which is why it sports a vinyl covered roof and side badges. In 1980 the car was imported into the UK and has been employed as a wedding carriage for many years.
Finished in Ivory with duo-tone, Ivory and beige interior, the car has benefited from a rebuild of the automatic box in 2006, which was due to hardening of the internal seals. At the time of the rebuild the mounting bushes were also changed. The car is also equipped with a stainless steel exhaust.
The car is equipped with the straight six engine and automatic transmission, is described as being in extremely good condition and is said to drive exceptionally well.
