Lot 174: c.1939 Bismarck 98cc Autocycle
Professor Fritz Ehn Motorcycle Museum Collection, Bonhams (30th June 2008)
Fahrradwerke Bismark AG - The Bismarck Bicycle Works - was, as its name implies, a prominent maker of bicycles in Germany for over half a century. In addition, like most cycle makers, the company made a range of powered two-wheelers like this 98cc example, the engine size being chosen, as in other European countries, to fit in a category which did not then need a driving licence. This very original and largely complete example of what has become a rare survivor, war and upheaval having taken their toll, was acquired by the Ehn Museum in the 1960s and has, of course, been kept in ideal conditions since. It is a typical autocycle design of the period and will, of course need careful restoration and recommissioning because of its long period of inactivity, as well as new tyres. No documents have been found for the Bismarck.
