Lot 177: 1972 Ferrari 365GTS/4 ‘Daytona’ NART Spyder

The example presented here is an original Ferrari ‘Daytona’ Spyder, the 71st car built of a total of a mere 121. Completed in December 1972, it is an original left-hand drive model built for the United States market. Inspection of the build records reveals the car was equipped with air conditioning and that its original paint colour was light red with black leather seats and a full black interior. Upon completion by Ferrari, ‘16467’ was sent to Modern Classic Motors in Reno, Nevada and sold to their customer, a Mr. Greer.

In 1975, the Daytona was damaged while being used in the filming of the Warner Brothers motion picture, A Star is Born, starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. In need of extensive repairs as a result, ‘16467’ was sold to Ferrari importer and North American Racing Team (NART) owner, Luigi Chinetti, who rebuilt the car at an internal cost of $6,000. Instead of merely repairing the bodywork in its original style, Chinetti commissioned stylist Giovanni Michelotti to design and execute a special one-off body for the car. Born in Turin, Italy in 1921, Giovanni Michelotti worked for a number of prominent carrozzeria, most notably Vignale where he was chief designer, before opening his own design studio. He worked for a number of different manufacturers and is perhaps best remembered for his many successful designs for Triumph in the UK.

‘16467’ is one of only four Daytonas bodied as NART Spyders by Michelotti, the others being ‘14299’, ‘15003’ and ‘15965’, though it is the only one originally manufactured by Ferrari as a 365GTS/4 Spyder. The approach to the design and construction of this unique car is firmly rooted in the carrozzeria tradition, where the individual customer, not the manufacturer, would commission a bespoke product. Ferrari had recently ceased production of the Daytona at Maranello, but nevertheless Luigi Chinetti gave Michelotti the task of developing a contemporary, exclusive spyder around ‘16467’. Although neither knew it at the time, this was the last car the great Giovanni Michelotti ever designed. He died in 1980 at the age of only 59.

Michelotti found designing the car’s nose a challenge due to the large V12 engine at the front, but with a thin bumper, pop-up headlights and straight but clean lines, solved the problem with typical mastery. He also redesigned the interior along similarly simple but contemporary lines, while maintaining a classical layout for the original, factory-fitted instruments. The seats were upholstered in leather, complemented by dark brown cloth inserts to the fascia and door panels, while the beige soft-top was a conventional convertible. Michelotti’s newly redesigned NART Spyder was proudly displayed on the Carrozzeria Michelotti stand at the Turin Motor Show in 1980. From that point onwards, ‘16467’ has been in the tight clutches of a mere handful collectors in the United States and today remains in very presentable overall condition, ready to be driven and enjoyed at all speeds.

En 1975, la Daytona fut endommagée lors du tournage du film A Star is Born avec Barbra Streisand et Kris Kristofferson. Vu l’importance des réparations, « 16467 », fut vendue à l’importateur Ferrari et propriétaire de l’écurie North American Racing Team (NART) Luigi Chinetti, qui reconstruisit la voiture pour un coût interne de 6 000 dollars. Mais au lieu de remettre la carrosserie dans sa configuration d’origine, Chinetti demanda au styliste Giovanni Michelotti de dessiner et de réaliser une carrosserie spéciale.

« 16467 » est une des quatre Daytona carrossées en Spyder NART (les autres étant « 14299 », « 15003 » et « 15965 »). La démarche stylistique et la fabrication de cette voiture unique relèvent totalement de la tradition de la carrozzeria italienne. Ferrari venait d’arrêter la production de la Daytona, mais Chinetti confia à Michelotti la tâche de créer un spyder exclusif sur ce châssis. Sans que personne ne s’en doute à l’époque, ce devait être la dernière étude de Michelotti qui mourut en 1980 âgé seulement de 59 ans.
Michelotti dut résoudre un problème en traçant les lignes de l’avant en raison du gros moteur V12, mais grâce au choix d’un pare-chocs mince, de projecteurs éclipsables et de lignes droites et pures, il le résolut avec talent. Il redessina aussi l’intérieur dans un style simple et contemporain tout en conservant une planche de bord classique comportant l’instrumentation d’origine. Les sièges furent garnis en cuir et les panneaux de la planche de bord et des portes reçurent des empiècements en cuir brun. La capote beige était celle du cabriolet standard. Le Spyder NART « 16467 » fut exposé sur le stand Michelotti au Salon de Turin 1980 avant de passer aux mains de quelques rares collectionneurs américains. Il se présente aujourd’hui dans un très bon état général et prêt à pendre la route.
