Lot 033: Renault Monaquatre

Louis Renault made his first car, a De Dion-engined vehicle of 273cc, in 1898 in the backyard of his parents' house. From 1900 Renault fitted 500cc De Dion engines and then made twin-cylinder models such as the 8CV and the 20CV, many of which were used as taxis in Paris and London, where they survived for many years. By the outbreak of war, Renault had become one of the most important car manufacturers in Europe. The Monaquatre was a popular mid-sized car produced by Renault between 1931 and 1936. Powered by a 1299cc sidevalve engine driving through a three-speed box it was capable of 55mph. Suspension was by semi-elliptics at the front, transverse leaf at the rear.Dating from 1932, this original RHD car was imported from South Africa and first registered in England in 1975. It was then believed to have been used as a showroom exhibit for the next seven years or so. It is said to remain in very good condition today with very sound bodywork and an excellent chassis. never needed anything other than routine maintenance. Mechanically the car appears to be very original as can be seen by the Renault part numbers and logo on many easily visible parts. It has recently been fitted with four new tyres and period side mirrors.With two inward facing rear seats, it can also carry four persons in relative comfort. We are informed that there is a very active club for pre-1940 Renaults in the UK so advice, parts and friendship are never far away!
