Lot 128: Jaguar MKII 2.4 Sports Saloon

Classic Cars, Barons (1st August 2006)

It is hard to believe that 47 years have passed since the launch of the Jaguar MKII. It is even more remarkable to note that demand for this Iconic classic remains undiminished, with specialists offering modernised versions for £50,000+ and restored, unmodified cars, still achieving high values. The styling of the MKII is timeless, the performance is more than adequate and ownership is made simple via a huge spares and specialist repair network. This early 2.4 example is equipped with the desirable manual+overdrive gearbox. This combination offers excellent levels of performance, which still surprises many. While this may be the baby MKII, it still has a 2400cc, straight six, XK engine under the bonnet and is equipped with the same luxuries as the 3.4/3.4 cars.First owned from 1962 to 1966, when it was acquired by a retired RAF engineer, who kept it for 30 years. The car was eventually sold to the third owner and vendor in 1996. The car is well known in club circles and has even appeared on the cover of Jaguar Driver magazine, the publication of the oldest established Jaguar Club, The Jaguar Drivers Club. The vendor states that the car is predominately original, having had no major structural welding or bodywork carried out during its 44 year life, although it has required one minor piece of welding. The interior leather, headlining, door panels and wood veneer are all original and the mechanics are said to be excellent. In 2004 the vendor did have the car professionally repainted, in the original colour, because the original paint had gone flat.Described as having provided reliable, classic transport the car is said to start without drama, maintain 40+psi oil pressure and 70 degree coolant temperature. The vendor has used the car twice weekly, weather permitting, for transport to work, on a 30 mile round trip and has never encountered a problem. The car has been equipped with chrome wire wheels and has been fitted with new boot rubber seal, rear spat rubbers and has had the scuttle air intake overhauled.A rare opportunity to acquire a very original, unmodified MKII.
