Lot 203: MG A Twin-Cam Roadster

Automobiles of Amelia Island, RM Auctions (12 March 2011)

108 bhp, 1,588 cc DOHC inline four-cylinder engine, dual SU carburetors, four-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension, live rear axle, and four-wheel Dunlop hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 94"

- One of about 2,110 Twin-Cam MGAs built - A three-year, concours-level restoration completed in 2008 - A dry, rust- and damage-free East Oregon barn find

The MGA debuted in September 1955 and marked a radical departure from its predecessors. It garnered a loyal following, however, and in the spring of 1958, the Twin-Cam arrived, which included Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes and disc-type knock-off wheels. With nearly 40 hp more than the standard 1,500-cc MGA, the Twin Cam could exceed 110 mph. About 2,100 Twin-Cam coupes and roadsters were built through early 1960.

This example, chassis YD3/1841, is an original US-delivery car with known history dating to 1967 in Oregon. It was discovered complete in East Oregon as a barn find by the current owner with no rust or damage in evidence, retaining the rare twin-cam engine, and restored over three years with restored original parts where possible. The body was refinished by Arizona's Tim Marino in the car's factory-original Mineral Blue color, which was specifically reserved for Twin-Cam MGAs. An MG specialist in England properly re-trimmed the grey leather Competition Deluxe leather seats. The drivetrain, electric system and suspension were restored, and the brakes were rebuilt with the Dunlop calipers re-sleeved and rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics. Most of the original nuts and bolts remain in use on the finished car.

Shortly after completion in 2008, the Twin-Cam entered the National MGA GT-33 event in Pennsylvania, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Twin-Cam MGA where we understand it was selected to be a feature car in a Classic MG article on the event. It went on to receive other awards at two other concours events. With only some 300 miles since restoration and beautifully presented, the Twin-Cam is offered complete with restoration documents, a BMIHT certificate and tools.
