Lot 160: 1956 Puch 123cc RL 125 Scooter
Professor Fritz Ehn Motorcycle Museum Collection, Bonhams (30th June 2008)
Arguably the scooter market peaked in the late 1950s, by when large and small firms alike had taken up the cause; one of its attractions to industrialists was the potentially low-cost notion of a formation of the scooter's main body from but one steel pressing, plus the fact so many components could be located out of sight, functional, and without a cosmetic priority. Puch, one of Austria's largest firms, successfully harnessed the scooter boom with models of 50 and 60cc and, from 1952 on, the top-of-the-range RL 125 - some of which had electric starters, and - whose side-panel shape was surely with by cooperation with Lambretta. Aside from the headlight region the original spec, olive green un-restored scooter has distinctive Italian lines, although making use of larger diameter wheels. Having arrived at the Museum in 1981 it is offered with a selection of Austrian 'paperwork'.
