Lot 129: Porsche 912 - 2.0
Classic - Collectors and Historic Motor Cars, Barons (18th March 2008)
Between 1965 and 1969, Porsche eased the transition between the 356 and the 911 with the 9123. The model was announced in April 1965 with the same great aerodynamics, ergonomics, style, and quality of construction as a six-cylinder 911. The combination of fuel-efficiency, low-weight, and low-drag coefficient made the 912 a "green" low-fuel consumption vehicle capable of up to 30 MPG when cruising. First available to the public in August 1965, the 912 outsold the 911 almost two to ono, with 6,401 912s produced versus 3,390 of the quicker 911s. Overall for 1966, Porsche produced 9,090 912s versus 3,730 of the 911s. The 912 won Car and Driver's 1967 "Readers Choice" Poll for its class. With its nimble handling combined with high reliability, a racing 912 won the European Rally Championship in 1967.Offered here is a 912 which was imported from the USA in 1999. A short wheelbase, early car, it has been the subject of extensive, mainly period, modification, resulting in highly usable, fun to drive classic Porsche. The car has been equipped with a 1968 911E 2000, which has been uprated with 911 internals and now gives 155bhp. With just 950kg of car to propel, this 912 is quite lively and great fun to drive. Presented in excellent condition, the car has benefited from over 12000 worth of expenditure over the past 18 months, including an engine and gearbox rebuild, new brakes (discs all round) interior retrim and forged, 6" wide, alloy road wheels (Fuch's). Prior to this the car also received a major body restoration and is described as being extremely sound. Finished in ivory white with black interior, the car is equipped with Koni shocks and relatively new, Goodyear 205 tyres, which result in a compliant ride and predictable handling. This Porsche 912 offers its new owner many years of enjoyable classic motoring.
