Lot 620: Jaguar E-Type Series 1

Of all the many E-Type variants, it is the Series 1 4.2-litre Roadster that the majority of enthusiasts consider the most desirable, combining as it does the purity of the original concept with ‘fresh air’ motoring and the larger engine’s superior performance. The 4.2-litre version of Jaguar’s sensational E-Type was launched in October 1964, a more user-friendly all-synchromesh gearbox and superior Lockheed brake servo forming part of the improved specification together with the bigger, torquier engine. Apart from ‘4.2’ badging, the car’s external appearance was unchanged, but under the skin there were numerous detail improvements, chiefly to the electrical and cooling systems, and to the seating arrangements. Top speed remained unchanged at around 150mph, the main performance gain resulting from the larger engine being improved flexibility. This right-hand drive Series 1 4.2-litre roadster’s accompanying Jaguar Cars Limited Vehicle Information Sheet records that it was manufactured on 22nd June 1965 and despatched for sale via Henlys of London on 1st July that same year, while confirming that it retains matching chassis, engine and registration numbers. The original colour scheme is recorded as black with matching hardtop and beige interior trim. The vehicle was purchased by the current owner circa 1994, subsequently undergoing extensive refurbishment at recognised Jaguar specialists XK Engineering Limited of Coventry during the mid-1990s, and comes with a most extensive file of invoices detailing its no-expense-spared restoration that included a total rebuild of the monocoque and a new bonnet assembly. A Clifford CA1 Thatcham-approved alarm, stereo system and Kenlowe electric fan are the only listed deviations from factory specification. Since completion in 1998 the car has been used for high days and holidays, as well as Jaguar Enthusiast Club and other events. Family connections to the factory resulted in this car being featured at the closure of Jaguar’s Brown’s Lane plant in Coventry, photographs of it appearing in various newspapers/journals covering the story, including The Sun, The Daily Telegraph and the JEC magazine. We are advised that the gearlever knob is that of the final E-Type manufactured – ‘HDU 555N’. In addition to the numerous restoration invoices, ‘EDG 111C’ is offered with (copy) old-style logbooks, seven expired MoTs for the period 1997-2005, DVLA correspondence, Jaguar Drivers Club letters of valuation, current road fund licence and Swansea V5 registration document. It is expected to possess a fresh MoT by time of sale.
